Why your exam form photo gets rejected: 9 mistakes to avoid

Tiny faces, wrong KB size, busy backgrounds. The 9 most common reasons NEET, JEE, SSC, IBPS and UPSC photos get rejected, and how to fix each one.

1. The face is too small in the frame

This is the most common visual rejection. A photo with the head floating in a big empty margin can pass the KB check and still fail manual review. For passport-style exam photos, the face should fill most of the frame with the top of the head and both ears visible. Zoom the crop until the face dominates the picture.

2. A busy or coloured background

Cupboards, curtains, posters and other people in the frame are a quick way to get flagged. Stand in front of a plain white or light wall. ExamPhoto crops and compresses, but it does not replace backgrounds, so get this right when you take the photo.

3. Shadows on the face or wall

A single ceiling light creates harsh shadows under the eyes and behind the head. Face a window during the day for soft, even light, and stand a little away from the wall so your shadow falls out of the frame.

4. Uploading a photo forwarded on a chat app

Chat apps compress images aggressively. A photo that was sent and saved a few times can look fine on your phone and still be soft, blocky or already too small to resize cleanly. Always start from the original file in your camera roll.

5. The wrong file size in KB

Every exam sets its own range. NEET and JEE Main photos use 10–200 KB in ExamPhoto's presets, while IBPS and SBI photos use a much tighter 20–50 KB. A file that is too small fails just as often as one that is too large. See our guide on reducing photo size to 20 KB or 50 KB.

6. The wrong pixel dimensions

Some notices print exact pixels. IBPS and SBI ask for a 200×230 px photo, for example. Others give a size in centimetres. Mixing these up is a common reason for a "dimension" error. Our explainer on KB vs pixels vs cm clears this up.

7. An old photo or a different look

Many notices ask for a recent photo, and your appearance on exam day should match it. A photo from school with a very different hairstyle, beard or spectacles can cause trouble at verification. Take a new one for every major application season.

8. Caps, sunglasses, filters or beauty mode

Phone beauty modes smooth skin and change face shape. Combined with caps, tinted glasses or filters, this can fail an identity check. Turn off beauty and portrait effects and follow the notice on spectacles and head covering.

9. Uploading the photo in the signature slot (or the reverse)

It sounds obvious, but it happens a lot on mobile. Name your files clearly, for example neet-photo.jpg and neet-signature.jpg, and check the preview on the portal before you submit.

The fastest fix

Open the tool for your exam, crop so the face fills the frame, export, then check the KB and pixel size shown on the result. If you are filling several NTA forms, the NTA photo bundle prepares NEET, JEE Main and CUET photos from one crop.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the portal say my photo size is invalid?

The file is usually outside the KB range or the pixel size in the notice. Export again with the right preset, then check the KB and dimensions before you upload.

Can I use a selfie for an exam form photo?

A front-camera selfie held at arm's length usually distorts the face and adds shadows. Ask someone to take the photo from about 1.5 metres away against a plain light wall.

Will ExamPhoto guarantee my photo is accepted?

No. ExamPhoto checks pixels and file size. The exam authority also checks background, face size, recency and other visual rules that you must review yourself.

ExamPhoto is not affiliated with NTA, UPSC, SSC, IBPS, SBI, RRB or any exam authority. Sizes on this page match ExamPhoto's presets as of 5 November 2026. Always confirm the current official notice before you upload.
