How to reduce photo size to 20 KB or 50 KB without losing quality
Step-by-step: shrink a phone photo to 20 KB, 50 KB or any KB range for exam and government forms. Works on mobile, free, and your photo stays on your device.
Why your phone photo is so large
A modern phone photo is often 3000–4000 pixels wide and 2–6 MB in size. Exam portals want something much smaller, often a few hundred pixels and a few dozen KB. Trying to hit 20 KB while keeping 4000 pixels forces heavy compression, which is where the blur and blocky artefacts come from.
The two-step rule: pixels first, then KB
- Resize to the pixel size in your notice. An IBPS photo is 200×230 px. At that size a sharp JPEG naturally lands in the 20–50 KB band.
- Then fine-tune the JPEG quality until the file sits comfortably inside the allowed KB range.
ExamPhoto does both steps for you with each exam preset, and the custom image resizer lets you type any width, height and KB range.
Step by step
- Open the tool for your form, or the custom resizer if your form is not listed.
- Upload the original photo from your gallery or camera.
- Move and zoom it inside the crop frame so the face fills most of the box.
- Make the JPEG and read the result: it shows the final KB and pixel size.
- Download it and upload it to the portal.
Common KB targets in ExamPhoto presets
| Form | Pixels | File size |
|---|---|---|
| IBPS / SBI photo | 200×230 | 20–50 KB |
| IBPS / SBI signature | 140×60 | 10–20 KB |
| PAN photo | 197×276 | up to 20 KB |
| NEET / JEE Main photo | 413×531 working crop | 10–200 KB |
| UPSC photo | 550×550 working crop | 20–300 KB |
These are preparation targets. Notices change, so confirm the numbers on the official instructions for your session.
When the file is too small
Portals reject files below the minimum too. If a signature comes out under 10 KB, the ink is probably tiny inside a big white frame. Zoom the crop so the signature fills the strip; more detail means a larger, valid file.
Do not hand your ID photo to random websites
Many "reduce photo size" sites upload your picture to their servers. ExamPhoto compresses in your browser and only uploads if you choose a five-minute transfer link. Read more in is it safe to use an online photo resizer?

Frequently asked questions
How do I reduce a photo to exactly 20 KB?
Most forms give a range, not an exact size. Crop to the required pixels, then export a JPEG inside the range, for example 15–20 KB for a form that allows up to 20 KB.
Why does my photo look blurry after compressing?
Usually because a large photo was squeezed into a tiny KB size without reducing its pixel dimensions first. Resize to the required pixels, then compress.
Can I reduce photo size on my phone?
Yes. ExamPhoto runs in your phone browser. Pick the photo, crop it, and download the JPEG. Nothing is installed and the image is processed on your device.
